UCA JANUARY MEETING...

SATURDAY, January 18, 2025

9:45 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

at the

Utah Cultural Celebration Center

1355 West 3100 South • West Valley City, UT

We are so fortunate to have Melissa Esplin for our teacher. We will be learning “Modern Calligraphy”using a pointed nib.

Those who are familiar with Melissa and her beautiful pointed pen calligraphy know we are in for a treat! You can see her work featured alongside these words.
Our monthly UCA meetings will begin right at 10:00 a.m.  Please come at least 15 minutes early to find a seat, look at books in our new library,  and check out or add to the items in the Flea Market.  Be sure to bring some cash to pay for items you buy.  Please put your money in the Flea Market tin.  We only accept cash—no checks or Venmo.
All proceeds will go toward the Christmas Compendium in November.

You are invited to come early--around 9:45 a.m. THE LIBRARY IS OPEN!

The Utah Calligraphic Artists have a variety of books available for lending to members.

These books are now kept at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center.  Robyn Gabriel is our new Librarian and she can assist you if you would like to see what we have or sign out a book.  Of course the books need to be returned in a reasonable amount of time.

Materials to bring:
  • Oblique holder - oblique is ideal for righties, straight or oblique holder for lefties
  • Pencil
  • Medium stiffness pointed pen nib - I prefer hunt 22b; but anything like a Nikko G, Gillott 404, Hiro 41, Hunt 56, etc should be great. Super sharp points like the hunt 101 or principality nib might be a little more difficult to work with, but not deal breakers by any stretch. I'll have extra nibs available for purchase.
  • Ink - I prefer walnut or Higgins eternal. Any kind that works with your paper is great.
  • Paper - either the handouts printed on a paper that can handle pointed pen, or marker layout paper so you can slip the guide sheets underneath and still see through. DO NOT bring tracing paper.
  • Handouts (These will be available on our website.  I will let you know soon.)
Description:
Have you ever tried to loosen up your pointed pen style and it just ends up looking like knotted spaghetti? We're going to dive into Modern Calligraphy; how to make it loose, stylish and energetic while still understanding and honoring the essentials of legibility and classical pointed pen theory. We will be sticking to this particular style, but the theory we will cover will give you a baseline for how to create your own modern style!

Please go to the 2025 Handouts tab at the top of this page and

print out the January handouts to use in this meeting.

You will need the handouts for our Saturday Meeting!
