APRIL UCA MEETING 2024

In her book Written Letters, Jackie Svaren told us that the calligrapher Lloyd Reynolds called Black Letter the "Christmas Alphabet" because everyone can read it during the holidays. The rest of the year it is not as legible.

On April 27th, 2024, Carole Taylor will teach us how to use the Black Letter alphabet, and she will show us how to use this alphabet all year 'round.

Carole is an enthusiastic, well regarded calligrapher and teacher. She has spent most of her life lettering words of encouragement, wisdom and inspiration. In October 2012, Carole presented a one woman exhibit at the Covey Center Gallery in Provo, where she amazed crowds with her beautiful calligraphy!

PREPARE TO BE AMAZED!!

9:00 a.m. Jane Hales will help members of UCA refresh their broad edge pen skills and show beginners how to use a broad edge pen nib especially as it relates to Black Letter.

10:00 a.m. Our usual UCA meeting will begin. Those who took Jane's 9:00 a.m. class will join us. After a welcome from our President, Jenice Jones, and any announcements, we will begin our Black Letter Class taught by Carole Taylor.

SUPPLIES TO BRING:

4 or 5 8x11 sheets of paper lined with 3/4" inter-linear spaces. (Please test your ink on the paper you choose making sure it does not feather).

4 or 5 8x11 sheets ruled at 1.25" intervals

Extra paper.....just in case you work fast and 'fill' more sheets

Pencil & Eraser

Ruler

C-0 Speedball nib & nib holder, or, if you are familiar with Parallel Pens, the blue cap Parallel Pen may be used.

Ink of your choice (Pelikan 4001, walnut Ink, Higgins Eternal, or even water colors)

Water container

Brush

Small container for diluting ink

Paper towels

Scissors

1/3 yd of small ribbon

1/2" masking or decorative tape. (If it is wider, we can always cut it down)

List of favorite words or short quote (maybe even a longer one, just for fun)

Optional:

camera for taking pictures of exemplars from other sources

smaller pens ( micron or other small tipped writing tool)

examples of Black Letters that are tempting to try (for those who have done Black Letter before)
